The Irreal Object: An Exhibition in Your Mind

The Irreal Object: An Exhibition in Your Mind

October 19 - November 13, 2015

Frances Dorenbaum (curator)

Inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s essay, “The Irreal Object” (1940), this exhibition considers the capacity of art objects to open up the imagination. Rather than the artwork being the object of the gaze, the “real” exhibition will be what is seen in the mind after these objects trigger one’s creative faculties. A selection of conceptual and post-conceptual works from the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection will attempt to stimulate different senses, inviting viewers to react to the works by imagining inventive solutions or fantastic experiences. Thus, viewers will actively participate in and create individual exhibition experiences through their own conjured ideas and interpretations. The exhibition features the work of more than twenty artists including Yoko Ono, Christian Marclay, Susanne Bürner, and Kimsooja.
