Description

Curated from the Mamolen Collection & the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection, What's Behind the Red Door? explores the legacy of the 20th century artist Edgar Miller, whose sheer diversity of work ranges from painting to stained glass to sculpture to graphic design and more. The exhibition focuses on the culmination of his career manifested in the R.W. Glasner Studio, one of Miller's "Handmade Homes", never before revealed from behind its eye-catching red door. Through displaying Miller's pieces with other selected artists' works, the glimpse into this architectural relic and artistic masterwork creates a contemporary dialogue between the artist and SAIC and re-contextualizes the Arts and Crafts aesthetic Miller's work embodied: the pursuit of embedding art in everyday living. This exhibition is associated with the Earl and Brenda Shapiro Center for Research and Collaboration's EAGER grant project, Art-as-Home.
